And around holidays like we have this week – Valentine’s Day – deciding to be happy can be tough if your love life isn’t where you want it to be.
For the first time in 32 years, I’m not part of a couple. That’s a big change, and one I never saw coming. Perhaps you’ve had a major change in your life since last Valentine’s Day, too? Or maybe your relationship isn’t as strong as you’d like? This happiness tool is for you, and the timing is just right.
We spend our lives making up stories.
- “Suzy didn’t return my call because she’s mad at me for some reason.”
“That guy cut me off in traffic because he’s a jerk!”
“I didn’t get the raise I deserved because a co-worker takes all the credit.”
Do you see the common thread in those stories? Something has happened and the reaction is negative. But they’re also fairy tales! Here are some alternate realities:
- Suzy’s depressed and not feeling like talking.
The guy never saw you in traffic – he’s rushing to the hospital to see his daughter, who was just injured playing soccer.
You didn’t get the raise you wanted because you haven’t shown your boss how much value you bring.
We make up stories to explain what happens all around us anyway, so why not make up stories that serve you? Heck, if you need a laugh, make up stories that entertain you! It’s Valentine’s Day – how’s your love life going? Do you like the story of your life right now? If not, tell a new story – one that makes you happier. My story this Valentine’s Day is that life is better when I’m not having to walk on eggshells and when I’m surrounded only by those who truly love me – my friends, brothers and dogs. I’m choosing to make my most important relationship great – the one between me and me.
Want candy and flowers today? How wonderful to get just exactly what you want – get them for yourself! Happy Valentine’s Day, even if you’re recently uncoupled? Yep – even then, because you’re in charge of your happiness. Decide to be happy and you will be.
No matter what’s going on in your life, decide to make the best of it. Tell yourself an uplifting story, not a depressing one. Put the best spin on things, not the worst. And celebrate yourself when you get this step right, because this is your magic wand. You happy person, you!
