Eating and drinking are essential to life. But did you know that drinking plenty of water is essential to happiness?
Hydration helps your mood. Those suffering dehydration are crankier, can’t think as clearly, and have more problems remembering than their well-hydrated counterparts.
A small study done at the University of Connecticut’s Human Performance Laboratory revealed that even mild dehydration causes a drop in energy and mood. Researchers also noted higher incidence of headaches, lack of concentration and memory skills, and much higher anxiety levels.
So, if this sounds like you from time to time, maybe all you need to boost your happiness is a long, tall swig of water.
How much water? Well, that’s up for discussion among medical professionals. The “eight 8-ounce glasses” rule gets you pretty close to what most are suggesting, and here’s the good news – it doesn’t have to be plain water. Any beverage counts, because they all contain water.
Just remember the calories you’ll be consuming if you choose to drink eight 8-ounce sodas, fruit juices or beers. Gaining ten pounds won’t make you happy!
So, next time you feel foggy and cranky, down some water – it can’t hurt, and it could just make you happier!
