Play – doodle, color, throw darts – play! It doesn’t matter how old you are – how important your life position is – how many people count on you. Play is important.
Yes, even for you. Especially for you if you want to be happier.
As children, play is an important learning tool. As adults, play is important to keep us emotionally available to others, and to keep the right hemisphere of the brain challenged and growing. Research continues on exactly what each side of the brain does, but it’s generally believed that creativity, intuition and artistic abilities are governed by the right side of the brain. OK – that’s enough science for you today. Let’s talk about play.
Do you remember your childhood? How did you like to play – was it role-playing games like cowboys and Indians, solitary pursuits like art, or was it team sports? Whatever form of play floated your boat when you were a child will probably still engage your imagination. Play!
I love what I do, and often find myself working and forgetting to play. Forcing myself to take a break to work a puzzle, go for a motorcycle ride or take my dogs out for some fun games makes me fresher and more able to tackle problems that had me stymied before the play break. Maybe you’ve had the same revelation – play helps you work better. If that’s the only reason to add more play to your life, then it’s worth it. But it’s not.
Play doesn’t just make you a better problem-solver, play helps you overcome boredom, too. Boredom is the top of the slippery slope into depression and unhappiness, so anything that keeps your brain off of that trail is a really good thing!
Schedule play, because you’re probably out of the habit of playing. Sure, maybe now and then you take time for yourself, but I’m talking about you making a concerted effort to enjoy yourself on a regular basis. Look back to your childhood playtimes and rediscover the fun of play.
You’ll see your mood, your creativity and your productivity soar – just from going out to play. So make yourself happier – go play, already!
