This Happiness Quick Tip is all about permission. Are you more permissive with others than you are with yourself? Think about it carefully before answering!
When you see a friend behaving in a stressed-out manner, what’s your advice to them? “Take a break – you earned it!” or something along those lines? When you’re feeling stressed out, what does your internal voice tell you? “Buckle down – you can do this!” or something like that?
Do you see the disconnect there? Most of the time, we’re more compassionate with friends, family and co-workers than we are with ourselves. We expect so much more of ourselves, and carry it to extremes, especially when a deadline looms.
Maybe you’ve been in a situation like this before? I was ready to shoot a video and suddenly the tablet threw a tantrum. It didn’t crash or freeze – most of what it does it was perfectly willing to do. But commands for the camera resulted in … nothing. Because it was hot outside, and because the light was just right, and because I was looking as good as I was going to get that day, I wanted to knock out that video. But the more I clicked the buttons to make the tablet record, the more I realized that knocking out the tablet was becoming an option worth considering! (OK, not really.) Instead of walking away and giving myself time to trouble-shoot the issue, I stubbornly stood in the heat, repeatedly pushing buttons that weren’t working, hoping repetition might be the answer. Oh, and feeling like the stupidest person on the planet!
Wow. That’s a lot of stress to put on a poor innocent person, isn’t it? I would never treat a friend like that.
Does this sound a little bit like you, too, from time to time? Give yourself permission to decompress. Take a breather. Rest, and when you get back to the task at hand, you’ll be better able to tackle it.
