Know your purpose. This sounds pretty deep, because it is. What does “know your purpose” mean?
It means that you understand the value you bring to your family, your friends, your co-workers, your employees – everyone you interact with. It means you honor yourself as well as others when making decisions. It means you are at your happiest when using your purpose to guide life decisions.
How can you reach that understanding, sometimes called your “why?” Think about these four questions:
What talents do you have?
What is your expertise?
What are your values?
What is your passion?
Answer those questions truthfully, and assemble the puzzle. If you’re having a tough time, walk away and come back later. This isn’t something you have to figure out in five minutes, and it IS something that can change over the course of your life.
Why would it change? Because you change. I change. We all change. With experience comes wisdom, and with education comes a new life view. As those perspectives change, what’s important to you will change, too. There are people who do this exercise each year in January. They look at what was important a year ago, and then decide if it still fits in their life for the new year. Understanding their purpose helps them with any resolutions they may make, too, because those promises come from a deeper, more informed place.
When you understand what you contribute, how you add the greatest value, what your core beliefs are and what truly lights you up, then you’ll know your purpose. And a purpose-filled life is a happier one!
