Own your life – good & bad.
What the heck does that mean…own your life?
It means no excuses. No fear. No regrets.
No excuses – don’t give your power away by blaming your actions or results on outside influences. You’re not late because traffic was bad – you’re late because you didn’t leave early enough. You didn’t get passed over for the promotion because Susan brown-nosed her way into the job – you haven’t showcased your unique value well enough. You don’t have a messy desk because there’s too much paper in the world, you have a messy desk because you haven’t set up a system to deal with that paper. (Oh, wait – that’s not you, that’s me!)
No fear – don’t “what if” yourself into inaction. Don’t “if only” yourself into a melancholy mood. Don’t “but I can’t” yourself into powerlessness. There is only one person on this planet who has control over you, and that’s you. You control your thoughts, actions and choices, even when it feels like you don’t. No one can think inside your head except you, and when you think thoughts that don’t serve you, you sabotage your own life.
No regrets – you’re a good person. You act on good impulses. You want the best outcome. You did the best you could with the information you had. Give yourself the same benefit of the doubt you’d give anyone you love. The past is the past – you can’t change it, no matter how hard you try. Make peace with whatever it is you think you did or was done to you, and let it go. Focus on today – right now, this very moment. Focus on the only part of your life where you have power – this instant right here, and now this new instant.
