Gifts. From choosing to give a gift, to noodling out what the gift could be, to making or shopping for it, and then planning how the gift will look as the recipient gets it and exactly when and how to make the delivery, a lot goes in to giving a gift. Then there’s the aftermath – their reaction – pleasure? surprise? – and the warm feeling of knowing you’ve made another person happy. What could be better than creating happiness for someone you care about?
Just one thing. Doing it for yourself. Really!
You deserve a present. You’ve done something wonderful lately.
- Achieved a goal.
- Made it through a tough time.
- Held your tongue when you wanted to snap.
Truthfully, you do a lot of gift-worthy things in your everyday life. We all do, but we tend to take those things for granted. There’s a feeling that somehow what we accomplish – what we’re supposed to do – is less important than what others accomplish. This could be a case of underestimating the importance of your own talent, something many people do. Think of one thing you’re really good at – something that you can do with half your brain tied behind your back – and acknowledge that many people would love to have your ability in that area.
So if you have talents that others wish they had, doesn’t it follow that when you succeed using those talents, that’s a gift-worthy moment? Now you are beginning to understand why gifts create happiness – the very best ones are an acknowledgement of who the recipient is and why they matter.
But here’s the best part – gift-giving has the potential to create as much happiness as gift-receiving. The giver gets the fun of discovery, anticipation, creativity and surprise. The recipient gets the feeling of being seen, understood and valued.
Just imagine how good you’ll feel when you get to be both the giver and the recipient!
Celebrate yourself. Give yourself a present, and do it on a regular basis. Be sure to enjoy all aspects of that present – planning what it will be, making/shopping for it, and enjoying the moment it becomes yours. Revel in the happiness that bubbles up in you. You deserve it all!
